Stornoway Sea Angling Club

Promoting Sea Angling in the Western Isles

In order for the SYSAC to continue offering fishing, bar and sporting activities, new membership is required at the A.G.M. - being held on Thursday 15th January at 8pm.

If you want to see your club move forward, please come along - all are welcome. New ideas are always welcomed.

2015 Membership renewal is now open.

But did you know that as well as paying your membership fees at the Upstairs Bar, you can also pay them online - and have your membership card posted out to you?  Simply visit: and complete your details online.  Please allow 2-3 weeks to receive your card.  Please note a small charge is included for fees and postage expenses.

The main hall continues to be used regularly for private hire.  Past events have included wedding hire, charity and bingo evenings.

To enquire about hiring the hall contact Donna McKay, Bar Manager, tel. 01851 702021.

The Club would like to welcome our new Bar Manager, Donna McKay.

Donna, who has built up a wealth of bar experience from working in a number of local licenced premises, latterly managing the Royal British Legion, intends to focus on making the Upstairs Bar into a thriving place once again, focusing on sports, bar offers, and live music.

Recent live music from individual acts such as Tosh & Tonkan and Bugsy, have already taken place in the Upstairs Bar, with even more music acts planned (see our Calendar of Events page).  The Main Hall downstairs will offer the bigger bands once/twice a month.

With two pool tables, several darts boards, a variety of games, and big screen televisions, there is something to be found for everyone in the Club.

We have also listened to our members and have reduced the volume of the jukebox during quieter opening times.

All over 18 years welcome.

Now that the 2014 season has ended, we look back at the Club's senior and junior fishing events, and our successful 50th Western Isles Open.

Despite weather, boat issues and keeping up with fishing demands, we are very pleased with all that has been achieved.

Of course none of this would have been possible without the help and support of our members and volunteers - thank you all for helping us make 2014 such a success!  Look out 2015!

Farewell to Donald Taylor (ex-President) and Ishbel MacPherson (ex-Secretary) who have now left the Committee.  Due to personal commitments, Donnie Morrison (ex-Chairman) and Robert MacAulay (ex-Treasurer), have resigned their roles.  However, both remain members of the Committee.  The Club would like to thank all for their long-service and commitment to the Club.

Welcome to those taking up the following Committee roles: Angus Campbell (President), Angus MacKenzie (Chairman), Ally Campbell (Vice Chair & Fishing Secretary), and Gillian MacLeod (Treasurer).

SYSAC organised a Junior Fishing Coaching Weekend for juniors and parents with juniors, which was held on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th April.

The event provided practical tutorials on rods, reels and tackle, as well as bait collection and preparation.

This was also followed by a day out angling on a local beach or boat - all with experienced anglers and coaches. For further information about this event please contact: [email protected]

Congratulations to The Barbarians team who won the recent SYSAC Football Quiz held on Saturday 22nd March, beating off some stiff competition from 'The Rangers Club' and 'Hot Seat' teams.  The winning team will be first to be added to the SYSAC Football Quiz trophy, and also won themselves a £50 drinks voucher.

Due to its popularity, the SYSAC Football Quiz will now become an annual fixture in the SYSAC calendar.

SYSAC would like to thank all the groups and solo acts who took part in the Battle of the Bands evening held on 18th March.  Well done to the groups and solo acts who took part!

A big thanks also to event supporters and organisers.

The event was organised by Community Education, Lews Castle College and SYSAC, and we hope it will become an annual fixture and find more local music talent.

"What a great night - that was so funny!", was just one of the many positive comments received by the Club's charity evening, held on 15th February, which raised over £600 for the Stornoway RNLI.

The very able and glamorous Sandie Maciver presided as the Club's very own 'Cilla', and wowed the audience with her unique brand of humour.  The evening also featured two local Policemen from the Stornoway branch of Police Scotland, who, although did not take part, did agree to have their photo taken with staff and female members of the audience, to the song 'You Can Leave Your Hat On'!

Such was the surprising popularity of the evening that organisers were forced to apologise to requests from future contestants as they had run out of questions!  Due to the success of the night, another 'Blind Date and Mr & Mrs evening' is currently being planned - look out for details!  See below for just some of the photos from the night.
